Research Approach

Dimensions Foundation’s research approach has been primarily qualitative action research but several studies include mixed methodologies as well. A unique characteristic of this research approach is the use of teachers as collaborators and co-researchers. Dimensions’ Education Programs teachers and independent researchers at other sites have been collecting data since 1998.

Over the years, expanded research has included mixed-methods and outside researchers on larger studies. In 2013-2014 we worked with the University of Wisconsin-Madison on a post occupancy study of outdoor classrooms. Dimensions’ work is an important addition to the growing body of research about the benefits of connecting children with nature. Dimensions puts research into practice as the data that is collected informs the creation and use of Nature Explore Classrooms and supporting materials on an ongoing basis.
